Today is World Mental Health Day. It’s a day to remind us of the importance of good mental health and the need to prioritise and invest in good mental health. However, we should be thinking about our mental health and wellbeing every day. As it’s just as important as our physical health.
The theme this year is the mental health impact of repeated exposure to news coverage of crisis and conflicts and how this can make us feel overwhelmed.
In the digital age that we live in, it’s virtually impossible to avoid global and local news. It feels like the world is in crisis. Wars, economic instability, climate change and political unrest. If we scroll though our phones first thing in the morning or watch the news, we are starting off the day with feelings of uncertainty, sadness, stress and anxiety. We then set off to face the world, whether that be at work, family life or both. It’s no wonder that at times we are short tempered, struggle to concentrate and in general feel overwhelmed.
There are many things that are in our control and can really help, from setting boundaries to the amount of news and content we view to chatting to friends and family about our worries and concerns. Spending time in nature is linked to improved mood, lower stress levels and reduced anxiety. Regular outdoor activities or simply bringing elements of nature into our homes and workspaces can have a long-lasting impact on our mental wellbeing.
Fish tanks and aquariums can improve both physiological and psychological factors on the body. Findings suggest that the peaceful environment they create, through the bubbling sounds and the hypnotic movements of the fish, encourages better sleep, improved mindfulness and relaxation and improved mood.
Studies show that viewing aquariums can lower heart rate, blood pressure and cortisol levels. If a work force is relaxed, content and happy they are much more likely to be more productive and have fewer sick days.
Aqualease have installed and maintained many aquariums in businesses within the North West of England, from our standard tank designs to custom build. Each one, not only enhances the look of the office, boardroom and meeting space but contributes to biophilic wellbeing.
