Tropical Fish

Originating in the wild from the Amazon River Basin, south east Asia and other parts of the world.

Tropical fish are suitable for many of the aquariums we lease here at Aqualease and would bring a real sense of calm and tranquillity to GP surgeries, dental waiting rooms, offices and reception areas.

Angelfish

Pterophyllum Scalare

They are striking in their pattern and colouration, ranging from solid silver to coloured stripes of black and silver marble.  Angelfish are graceful swimmers using their unusual angular body and long ventricle fins to glide through the water.

Behaviour: Angelfish are intelligent and interactive, often recognising their owner and swimming up to the tank for food and attention.  They are usually peaceful but can show territorial and aggressive behaviour.

Size: 6” (15cm)

Blue Rainbow Fish

Melanotaenia Lacustris

They are sociable fish and thrive in community aquariums, where their peaceful and shoaling nature make them incredibly relaxing to watch.

Sleek and streamlined, they move through planted aquariums showing off their rich iridescent shades of electric blue that shift and flash in the light.

Behaviour: Blue rainbow fish are active swimmers and love open space within an aquarium.  They enjoy exploring the tank with others and will often mimic their movements.  They are very peaceful which makes them a great community fish.

Size: 4-5” (10-13cm)

Red Rosy Barb

Puntius Conchonius

Red Rosey Barb’s are active fish, thriving in groups where their playful chasing and schooling behaviour bring energy and motion to an aquarium.

The Rosy Barb glows with a warm, reddish-pink hue, especially in males during breeding season, when their colours intensify into brilliant shades of crimson and rose gold.  With the females being more subdued in dull gold, olive or yellow.

Behaviour: They like to be kept in groups where they will form a social hierarchy.  Within these groups they are very active, darting around the tank, enjoying open spaces.

Size: 4-6” (10-15cm)

Origin: South Asia from Afghanistan to Bangladesh

Boesemani Rainbow Fish

Melanotaenia Boesemani

What makes these fish so striking are their dramatic two-tone colouration.  The front of the body glows with a rich, steel blue or violet hue, while the back half bursts into a fiery orange or golden yellow.

They are active swimmers and thrive in peaceful schools, adding constant colour and movement to your aquarium.

Behaviour: They are peaceful in nature and get along with other fish who are calm, thriving in larger numbers where they feel more confident. They enjoy swimming in open areas of the tank but enjoy the safety of plants or driftwood for resting.

Size: 4-5” (10-13cm)

Severum Cichlids

Heros Severus

They have deep, compressed bodies and pointed dorsal, anal and pectoral fins that taper off to an attractive point, creating a distinct circular shape.

Usually yellow-gold in colour, sporting subtle orange accents, they would make a lovely addition to any tropical aquarium.

Behaviour: They are generally peaceful for a Cichlid but may become territorial during breeding periods or if space is limited.  Severum’s are curious and interactive, often recognising their owner and following movement outside the tank.

Size: 6-8” (15-20cm)

Origin: South America, particularly the Amazon and Orinoco rivers.

Red Rainbow Fish

Glossolepis Incisus

Make popular aquarium fish due to their vibrant red colouration and peaceful temperament.  They can be quite skittish in nature so are more settled when in shoals.

Behaviour: They are generally peaceful in nature and thrive when kept in shoals of similar species.  Red rainbow fish are very energetic, often seen darting across the mid to upper levels of the tank.

Size: 4-5” (10-13cm)

Gold Gourami

Trichogaster Trichopterus

These fish are entertaining to observe due to their labyrinth organ.  This allows them to breath air from the surface of the water as well as through their gills.

They are eye catching within the aquarium due to their distinct colour.  Glowing with a warm, golden-yellow hue, sometimes accented by soft orange tones or subtle marbling across its body.

Behaviour: They are nest builders, using surface plants or bubbles to prepare for spawning.  Males can become aggressive during breeding periods.  Gold gourami’s are intelligent and curious, often learning feeding routines.

Size: 4-5” (10-13cm)

Silver Shark

Balantiocheilos Melanopterus

This fish takes its name from its torpedo-shaped body.  Showcasing silver scales with striking black bands along its dorsal and pelvic fins.

The Silver Shark is a peaceful, community fish, creating visual interest within tropical aquariums.

Behaviour: Silver shark are peaceful fish and thrive in community tanks with similar sized fish.  They can be easily startled, often darting quickly when spooked.  They are highly active and energetic swimmers.

Size: 12-14” (30-35cm)
